Tags are labels you apply to items to group and filter them, and an item can carry several at once. Every tag belongs to a category, which you create first. Tags appear in several areas across the system — products and articles, components, orders, measurement charts, product images, and BOM placements — and while the idea is the same everywhere, the areas differ slightly in how you edit them.

A category is the dimension a set of tags belongs to, and every tag sits inside one. You work with them the same way across all tag areas.

To add a category, type its name in the New category name field and click Add. Categories are edited in a popper: click the category where it's been created on the page, to open it. In the popper you edit the category's name and — for product and article tags — what level, the hierarchy nodes it applies to, left empty to apply to all nodes (a display setting) and the uniqueness state which limits to only choose one tag per category per article/product. You can add it from the dropdown beside the New category name field when you create the category; left as none, an item can carry several tags from the category. Order tags also use uniqueness rules.

To add a tag, use the + Tag inside the category and give it a name. To edit a tag afterwards, click it: a small Edit tag popper opens where you set its name and color (copy RGB from another tag in the same group to get the same color).

The Check tag violations action scans for items that break a category's uniqueness rule so you can correct them.

The Tags page holds two sets at once: product tags, which apply to the whole product, and article tags, which apply to individual articles. Both use categories with the uniqueness setting above. A tag category can be made visible on selected hierarchy nodes. Any visibility settings configured in Hierarchy Admin are also reflected here.

Component tags use the same category-and-tag setup, applied to components, on their own page.

Order tags apply to orders, and their categories carry the same uniqueness setting, so you can require that an order takes only one tag from a category.

Measurement chart tags apply to measurement charts.

Product image tags categorize a product's images so the gallery can be organized.

BOM placement tags are where editing differs most. They apply to placements within a bill of materials, and instead of a category uniqueness dropdown each tag has its own Once per BOM toggle — turn it on and that tag can be used on only a single placement within the same BOM.
